On to Wisconsin...
My early childhood and – later - graduate student days at the University of Wisconsin Madison were the best for me in the United States.
How come I got a quasi-free pass in Madison? By then I was definitely on the hit list of the all-powerful US secret political police. And for them, anything – up to and including outright murder – goes. They are not bound my any Constitution, Bill of Rights, any smattering of human decency, any qualms...
At the time, I was essentially naive about the machinations of the American secret political police and had no clue that they systematically followed and secretly harassed people, subjected them to psychological warfare and killed opponents of the “system.”
I have since learned that during my graduate student days, I was under the methodical, many-sided and comprehensive surveillance of the US secret political police. But in Madison, Wisconsin they did not endeavor to make my life unbearable or even viciously interfere directly. Why such indulgence?
Because the US Gestapo had big potential plans for me. Even at this early stage in my life. Plans which I will elaborate in later posts of this series and which aimed at my eventual murder.
My graduate student days presented the secret police swine an opportunity (a) to see whether love of science might drive me to abandon radical ideas; and (b) if not, to give me enough rope that I would hang myself - to their anticipated benefit.
Thus, there was no need to rush in killing Lockshin. After all, he was hardly dangerous. The police state apparatus in America is so all-embracing and powerful, that such a lone individual hardly posed or poses any tangible threat.
And in the longer stretch, Arnold Lockshin might prove to be a highly, highly useful tool.

As for me, I had graduated Phi Beta Kappa – i.e., with honors – at UC Berkeley and was ready to explore new vistas outside of my home base in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Arriving in Madison, I accepted the offer of Dr. Robert Burris, chairman of the Biochemistry Department, to work in his lab, and my efforts were fruitful as I succeded in publishing the results of both my master's thesis and Ph.D. thesis work in major scientific journals.
“Robert H. Burris (April 13, 1914 – May 11, 2010) was a professor in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1961. Research in Burris's lab focused on enzyme reaction mechanisms, and he made significant contributions to our knowledge of nitrogen fixation... I know with certainty now - but had absolutely no idea at the time – that Burris as well as all my lab co-workers were ordered by the FBI to inform on me and to attempt to disabuse me of radical ideas. No utter, overt hostility at the time, but red-baiting was the usual fare from some of my lab partners (Burris himself kept a correct disposition towards me, but later got his digs in).
The “coverage” went beyond the one lab and extended to Biochem faculty members and other fellow grad students. The two secretaries in the Director's office could hardly hide their disdain for me.
Many years later after I arrived in Moscow, Burris was instructed by the FBI to subtly induce me to return to the States (to be discussed in a later post). Had I acceded to this ploy and returned to America, I would long ago have been a dead man. Thanks, Bob.
Roughly 12 years after I left UW, I ran into Burris' son John, who engaged in a dirty FBI-commissioned maneuver against me (too insignificant to detail here):

Prior to his appointment at Beloit in 2000, Dr. Burris served for eight years as director and CEO of the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Mass. Not so radical co-op eating...
Shortly after arriving in Madison, quite by accident I found a place where I could get most of my meals at a reasonable price: “... the crowded tables, the movie nights and the shepherd’s pie served family style at Green Lantern Eating Cooperative, a fixture in the campus area from 1946 to 1986 and in later years a hub for those with leftist political leanings.” (Radical restaurant reboot, Isthmus Feb. 8, 2018)
For most of years at UW Madison (1960-1965), I ate at the Green Lantern. Real leftists were not to be found there, unfortunately. Fake, pretend “leftists” were fairly abundant.
