Do-nothing “communists”...


There is little point going into what most of the Ohio CP “comrades” did or what became of them. For these do-nothing FBI-puppets, ”Party” membership meant attending occasional “club” meetings and at times “contributing” secret political police-allocated money to the CP newspaper and the “Party.”


In Ohio in 1970 I organized what turned out to be the most significant workers' movement against the Vietnam war (see “Silent Terror,” p. 124-5), but the “Party” was virtually nowhere to be found. A couple of members were instructed to give token, insincere “help” while the local “Party” leaders either did nothing or engaged in diversionary tactics attempting to stifle the movement.


With this backdrop, it is worth mentioning two of the “comrades” to further illustrate how the FBI and its phonies operate.

The FBI long ago decided it was necessary to have one “comrade” in the huge U. S. Steel mill in Lorain, Ohio, about 30 miles west of Cleveland.


“The sprawling United States Steel Mill stretches for nearly 3 mi (4.8 km) on the city's south side. These mills had operated in the city since 1895 and employed thousands of local residents.” (Lorain, Ohio, Wikipedia)


When I was the “party” organizer for Ohio, George Edwards was the FBI “comrade” for US Steel. In spite of his “communist convictions,” George enjoyed a soft teaching job in the mill, receiving – according to him personally – the second highest pay grade at the plant.#


Edwards lived in a big house in East Cleveland, and lived – as so many “comrades” – a long (he lived to 94) and comfortable life. He had spent prison time for sex-related offences, which, however, did not prevent him from being “elected” later to the CP's “Central Committee.” When I took the lead in organizing labor opposition to the Vietnam War (see above), Edwards was nowhere to be found.


After he died, Ohio's largest circulation newspaper published a fawning and grossly embellished obituary for him (the CIA-run American mass media characteristically laud secret political police-”leftists” and always hide the treachery of their venerated ones):

“(George) Edwards, a proud Communist and a co-founder of the United Steelworkers, died Oct. 5 at Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh...

“This year, speakers praised him and audiences cheered him at the 70th annual Steelworkers convention in Cleveland and at a union civil rights forum in Cincinnati...

“After Edwards' death, Bruce Bostick, a former Local 1104 official, called him a 'great leader, activist, fighter for justice and equality.'


“He became a machinist at Lorain Steel Works... and he helped organize Local 1104 in 1942, the international's founding year. He became vice president of the local and started its newspaper, the Lorain Labor Leader...

“Edwards worked for many years training apprentices. After hours, he hired out as a photographer. He also made metal sculptures, including chess sets given to governments in Vietnam, Moscow and elsewhere. He liked to hike, camp, garden and can vegetables.

“In the 1970s, Edwards helped form the National Steelworkers Rank and File Committee. The group won reforms from the United Steelworkers, such as integrating departments at workplaces, integrating union leadership and letting members vote on contracts.##

“In retirement, Edwards helped to form the Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees### and became an international trustee... In 1992, Edwards was arrested for a sit-in that blocked trucks during a strike at Pittsburgh newspapers. In recent years, he protested with Occupy Pittsburgh.” (George R. Bruce Bostick (see above) was the younger FBI “Party” replacement for Edwards at US Steel:


“Gregory Bruce Bostick is a retired Ohio steelworker and long time Communist Party USA activist...
In May 1992 the Communist Party USA newspaper Peoples Weekly World published a May Day supplement which included a call to "support our continuing struggle for justice and dignity." Endorsers of the call included Bruce Bostick, Sec. grievance Committee, USWA Local 1104...

“In 1995 the Communist Party USA newspaper People's Weekly World, published a 'May Day salute' to the 'heroes in the class war zone.' More than 200 unionists endorsed the call, mostly known affiliates, or members of the Communist Party. Bruce Bostick, USWA Lorain Ohio, was one of those listed... In the United States of Dictatorship America, FBI pig – phony “revolutionary” Bostick can be both an “active” trade unionist and a publicly-known “communist.” For an honest American, nothing of the sort is even remotely possible.


Bostick supports both the war-mongering, 100% capitalist Democratic Party and the FBI-controlled AFL-CIO unions, including the steelworkers:

## Pure blarney. The various CP-organized “rank-and-file committees” did nothing meaningful, had no influence on the steelworkers' or any other union and soon went out of existence.

### There is no evidence that these “active retirees” did/do any more than the phony “rank-and-file committees.”
