Beginning to peel back the layers...

The Rob Baker articles...

Clearly, the Healeyite factionalists within the Southern California District of the “Communist Party USA” were anti-communists and enemies. But they could not be the end of it.

The FBI's “use of informants to disrupt a group's activities...” (see post 35 of this series) had to go well beyond the overt “oppositionists” in the “Party.” Analyzing the activities and positions of the non-factionalist “comrades,” I initially identified six internal enemy agents, 3 Black and 3 white. The whites were Aaron Cohen, manager of the “Party” bookstore, alleged Spanish Civil War veteran Bob Klonsky#, and People's World reporter Rob Baker. The Blacks included the District “Party” Chairman William C. Taylor and two youth “activists,” Gregory Binion and Hank Hucles.

Rob Baker (which may not have been his real name) was the easiest to focus on, as his disruptive activities were also evident in his “reporting.” Baker, “the long‐haired publicity director who (was) the only white on the national staff” of the National United Committee to Free Angela Davis##, had moved to Malibu (a wealthy suburb in western LA County) from Northern California. Baker published regularly in the “Party's” west-coast weekly, the People's World, and occasionally in the “CP's” national newspaper, The Daily World### as well as in the “underground” pornography-laden LA Free Press.

Baker and Kaiser Steel Fontana...

The large Kaiser Steel plant in Fontana, about an hour's drive east of Los Angeles, was the “Party's” “concentration plant.” a designation which amounted to little more than occasionally handing out a couple of hundred copies of the PW as workers drove into the plant.

“Kaiser Steel was founded by Henry J. Kaiser to provide steel plate for the Pacific Coast shipbuilding industry, which expanded during World War II, then shrank, then expanded again during the Korean War... Its assets included steelmaking plants in Napa, California and Fontana, California (now operated by California Steel Industries)...” (Kaiser Steel, Wikipedia)

The immediate issue on hand with Baker was the articles he wrote about a contract settlement between Kaiser Steel and the steelworkers' union, the USW. In his verbose front-page feature PW article – which was distributed in a larger than usual volume at the plant gates - Baker in point after point depicted the settlement as a total sell out of the workers' interests and a betrayal of their rights by the union leadership. However, in his article published in the DW and distributed shortly thereafter at a national USW gathering (conference or convention), Baker took the exact opposite tack. He wrote about the very same settlement as a solid victory for the rank-and-file and a big step forward in advancing the steelworkers' well being!

The “Party's” one “comrade” in the steel mill, Kevin Akin, reported that during the next local meeting the Fontana union president brought up the two flagrantly contradictory articles and at length denounced the “Party” for utter deceit and lying. Not without cause.

I set to work composing a detailed analysis of both articles, indicating that there could not have been anything accidental about this foul “reportage” and stating that these wildly contradictory articles amounted to sabotage of the “Party's” work at this most important, “concentration” factory. (In reality, this “concentration” was as much of a sham as anything else the “CP” did, but I was not fully aware of that salient fact at the time.)

At the next meeting of the District “Secretariat,” composed of Bill Taylor, Lorenzo Torres and myself, I brought up the Baker's obviously pernicious “reportage” and characterized him as an FBI agent. As expected, Taylor rose to Baker's defense, excusing the wildly contradictory articles and demanding that I work more closely with this “brilliant, young comrade” (Baker was about my age) to help him overcome his (trivial) mistakes.

Torres, who bragged about his working class background####, also found nothing objectionable about the two diametrically opposed articles. Torres, notwithstanding his status as a “leading comrade” and a full-timer, was among the great majority of “Party” drones who did nothing more than attend occasional meetings. All the same, he was the foremost Chicano* “communist,” not only in the District but in the “Party” nationwide.

The upshot: absolutely nothing would be done about Baker or the “brilliant young comrade's” obviously disruptive “reporting” or the “Party” media which published his malicious trash.

More clearly than before, enemies were in effective charge of the Southern California District of the “Communist Party USA.”

And obviously, not only there.
