The Glenn Michael Souther story is a fake. A CIA-KGB fake. A total fake.
(1) Anyone going to any Soviet embassy in any country – especially in a NATO country such as Italy – would be quickly identified by the CIA. No one could have gone to any Soviet embassy/consulate without US “intelligence” knowing about it directly through their own surveillance. Beyond that, long before 1980 the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs and all its embassies/consulates/affiliates abroad were under CIA control.
The day after I inquired about political asylum at the Soviet mission to the United Nations (in New York City), all my experimental animals were killed and I was fired – even before I returned home to Houston, Texas (Silent Terror, p. 44-46). The conclusion is obvious: the American secret political police immediately learned about my visit to the Soviet UN mission.
(2) In the US itself, secret political police control was/is so extensive that any attempt by anyone to offer espionage serves to the USSR would have been nipped in the bud. By 1980 – and in fact, long before then, no American could have offered any real military – or any other kind of – intelligence to the Soviet Union.
(3) Under these circumstances, it would have been impossible for Souther or anyone like him to subsequently (allegedly 6 years later) fly out of the US (to Italy, as claimed). My “family” and I were allowed to leave the US in October, 1986 simply because that was the plan (Sections 4-8). No “gift” or oversight was involved.
(4) What wonderful military information could any Souther-Орлов have possibly given the USSR?? The Soviet Union was on the verge of being destroyed internally. The CIA was in control of the Soviet government and the Communist Party. No US-USSR war was on the horizon.
Note this wild and absurd hyperbole:

The “authentic secret information” that Souther-Орлов provided was “extremely important.” I should say so! After all, he «and a few others” like him could have ensured victory for the Soviet Union in a nuclear war with the United States (and NATO)!! WOW! and DOUBLE WOW!
Simple folk – uninformed about Souther-Орлов and his prodigious feats - may be excused for doubting whether there would have been any real victors in such a horrendous massive exchange of nuclear weapons.
In any case, not to worry. Under absolutely no circumstances whatsoever would rotten CIA-stooge МС Горбачев have started a war with the US. And the US government, knowing full well that the certain final collapse of the Soviet Union was only a short while off, would not have started a shooting war either.
When Souther-Орлов allegedly put an end to his miserable existence, his heroic spying “exploits” were widely extolled and publicized by the CIA-controlled “soviet” mass media.
(5) The oh-so-”communist”-KGB was run by the horrendous US lie, spy, criminal, provocation, subversion and regime change, terror, drug-runnning, torture, war and mass murder apparatus. The KGB – no less than the CIA! - was working day and night to destroy the Soviet Union (Sections 34 and 42).
Our hero Souther-Орлов supposedly became a major in this traitorous KGB.
(6) And Souther-Орлов was so important that the very head of the KGB Владимир Крючков, Председатель КГБ и член Политбюро ЦК КПСС, personally attended this putative American spy's funeral.
Владимир Крючков was a 100%, lifelong vicious CIA agent who was no less responsible for the destruction of the Soviet Union than Горбачев or Ельцин.
Malicious fakery all around.
