Despite a “booming economy" in 2018, many Americans still struggle to put food on the table.
One-third of people in the U.S. are “financially insecure,” according to a recent report from an advocacy organization, the Institute for Women’s Policy Research. That means that in a given month, they are unable to pay for their housing, child care, food, and transportation costs.
South Dakota has the lowest annual threshold to achieve financial security, at $24,648 per household, while Washington, D.C. has the highest at $50,508. That means the average person would have to make twice as much per year to stay afloat in Washington, D.C. than in South Dakota. Hawaii and California were also listed as two of the most expensive places to attain financial stability, with Hawaii at $45,456 and California at $42,060.
The numbers climb even higher for families with children, the charts show. “Having children can put economic security increasingly out of reach,’ the report said.
Two working parents with one infant and one preschool-aged child would have to make over $101,000 per year to have financial security in New York and over $105,000 in Massachusetts.
In Washington, D.C. the threshold for financial security jumps to $124,000 for families with children.
The numbers come as wealth inequality in the U.S. reaches new highs and middle class families continue to struggle. One in 10 adults (nearly 15 million people) and one in six children in the U.S. have gone to bed hungry at some point in the past 3 years, a report from anti-hunger nonprofit Hunger Free America released in December found.
The slide into financial insecurity may accelerate if more workers don’t start benefiting from modest wage growth.
Corporations that just got a big tax cut are using it to have corporate stock buybacks and give more money to shareholders rather than give workers a raise. At the same time, Congress has failed to raise the poverty-level minimum wage.

An ordinary 2-children family in the U.S. commonly needs to earn over $100,000 a year to just live even modestly (see above)! That is about $8,300 a month.
In Russia, this sounds like a lot of money for an average family. Approximately 67 rubles = one U.S. dollar in Russia; meaning that the average American family needs the equivalent of over 550,000 rubles a month just to comfortably pay minimal living costs!
Yet a Russian family earning half a million rubles a month would be in the category of near-wealthy, if not actually wealthy!
The realities of life in the United States of America, the world's Number One imperialist, i.e plundering and predatory, power are (almost??) never described here.
