Socialism defeated by a more powerful enemy – but only temporarily...


The class struggle never end at the borders of one or another country.


The political disruptions, widespread economic sabotage and unbridled Nazi-led persecutions of innocent people in the USSR were just one chapter, an important one to be sure, in the world imperialist struggle against socialism - and the Soviet Union.


From the beginning to the very end of the USSR, the dominant forces of the world capitalist class plotted and warred – internally and externally – against the world's first socialist country. In fact, against all socialist countries. Let us briefly note the main phases of this relentless counter-revolutionary campaign.


** Beginning in 1918, several imperialist countries intervened militarily against the new socialist state in what is incorrectly designated as the “Russian Civil War.” Of course, Russian capitalists and reactionaries participated in this bloody conflict, but foreign invaders instigated the war and were dominant, both through direct military intervention and by arming, financing and directly their native domestic stooges.


** Assassinations, assassination attempts and foreign-directed subversive plots immediately following the successful Revolution were aimed at overthrowing the new Soviet government.


** Imperialist-directed political division and persisten internal dissension after the Revolution seriously hampered the country's development, especially the existentially essential drives to industrialize and to collectivize/modernize agriculture.


** The “inside” capture of the Soviet secret services by imperialist agents greatly obstructed the crucial struggle against the internal enemy, allowed for many provocations to go uncontested and greased the way for thousands of foreign-directed collaborators to attain leading and secondary positions in the USSR and eventually reaching the pinnacles of (apparent) power in the country.


** Mass imperialist-directed economic sabotage in the 1920s and 1930s and subsequent mass repression of innocent citizens have been discussed in this series.


** The huge “democratic” imperialist-sponsored military build-up and overall support of Nazi Germany – as well as fascist Japan, had the aim of inciting these ultra-reactionary countries to attack the Soviet Union militarily. Nazi Germany provided the main shock troops to become the leading edge of an overall imperialist design to physically destroy the USSR.


** Immense and tragic loss of human life and extensive material damage were the harsh prices paid for victory during the Great Patriotic War, when the Nazis and their fascist allies invaded the Soviet Union in June, 1941.


** The Cold War and nuclear arms race against the USSR erupted in full after the conclusion of World War II.


** The conquest of political power in the Soviet Union by imperialist agents took place after Joseph Stalin's death in 1953. Among the most notable events in this long-term coup was the slanderous “report” renouncing Stalin by CIA-stooge НС Хрущев in 1956.


** With thousands of anti-soviet agents increasingly promoted to key positions in the Communist Party, Soviet Government, economic structures, the mass media, culture, etc., it was a short step to the ultimate demise of the USSR. The CIA-controlled КГБ was a vital force in this “quiet” counter-revolution.


** The “перестройка» of CIA agent Горбачев was the final episode in this long-running counter-revolutionary plot.

The world-wide enemies of socialism invent and ballyhoo phony fabricated “deficiencies” of socialism as the root cause of the destruction of the USSR. Such “theorizing” is cover-up, fakery and treachery. Socialism and the Soviet Union did not succumb because of imagined internal defects. The world's first socialist state did not die of its own weight, but because it was viciously attacked inside and outside throughout its existence.

Imperialism could not have acted otherwise than attack the first socialist state, because the capitalist system is based on merciless human exploitation and cannot stand competition with socialism. With the USSR's revolutionary expropriation of privately-owned banks, corporation, etc., the powerful tycoons of banks and corporations not only “lost” a sizeable sector of their profiteering base; they likewise were forced to confront a non-exploitative economic-social-political regimen in the Soviet Union – and possibly beyond! - that was directed towards meeting and advancing the all-around needs of humanity. Down with profits! Up with people!


During the entire period of the Soviet Union's existence, imperialism was considerably more powerful than socialism. War and the threats of war were important factors in this international class struggle. But it was internal subversion that ultimately turned the tide.


It was not difficult for the ever-grasping, mainly Western ruling circles and their pernicious “intelligence agencies” to procure the souls of many thousands of collaborators within the USSR, to stick the knife in whenever and wherever they could. With counter-revolution as the inevitable result.


But capitalism is not and cannot be eternal. The fairly long period of phony-baloney money and massive, unrepayable debt, which has sustained the major capitalist countries (see my series “Modern Capitalism - the Marxist View”), will inevitably come to an end – perhaps in the not-so-distant future.


It is highly doubtful that humanity can survive additional centuries, or even decades, of brutal capitalism. Genuine socialism is the only viable alternative, the most vital necessity.
