What are the prospects for modern-day fascism? Will a new Nazi Germany arise?
Not an idle question. Ideologically – if that is what you can call his “thinking” - Donald Trump is a fascist. Ultra-chauvinism and vituperation of foreigners, non-ending war threats, filthy racism, adoration of the brutal American police, phony “populist” gifts to the ultra-wealthy, self-adoration, non-ending lies and demagogy – Trump-ism in the raw.
Yet while the United States of America is a police-state dictatorship, it is not yet fascist. (See my series “Dictatorship USA”)
The rise of ultra-right parties in country after country in Europe is also a cause for deep concern.

There was no Hitler “economic miracle” in the 1930s. What occurred was fundamentally the product of enormous investment and support from the western “democratic” countries, first and foremost the United States of America. See my series “Америка и фашизм» and previous posts in this supplemental series.
Western-financed massive German remilitarization markedly reduced unemployment; huge German foreign loans were effectively wiped off the books; the German currency (Reichsmark) was backed by new foreign loans; the Nazis were allowed to effect currency and trade manipulations with weaker countries in order to obtain critical materials and products at low prices. The Bank of International Settlements – in which US (and other imperialist) and Nazi bankers collaborated even after the countries were at war with eachother – helped guarantee additional vital economic support for Hitler's regime.
The Hitler “economic miracle?” The revitalization of Nazi Germany's economy and massive rearmament required huge external inputs. Otherwise, the country's economic crisis would have deepened and led to collapse.

Today, if some smaller country were to become overtly fascist, the US and other western countries might well offer analagous support. Even in these circumstances, economic improvement at best would be temporary. As it would have been in Nazi Germany, it Hitler had not invaded and vastly looted (gold and all) one country after another.
What if the USA itself became a fascist state? Where would the outside help come from?
Nowhere, is the answer.

Fascism, no less than bourgeois “democracy”, is a political system of capitalism. The intrinsic and insoluble contradictions of the for-profit system cannot be put aside or abolished by any political system, “democratic” or otherwise. Massive credit issuance, devaluation of capitalist currencies and brutal exploitation of foreign countries have – for a time – prevented an all-consuming collapse.
But in the absence of gigantic external monetary and financial sources, no capitalist country can somehow summon the fascist genie to solve the economic contradictions of the system. In fact, resort to a fascist dictatorship may well exascerbate already existing economic crisis phenomena. Moreover, giving up the ghost of bourgeois “democracy” would be a serious ideological and political setback for imperialism.
Is the danger of fascism to be ignored? NO WAY! Fascism is the outright terrorist dictatorship of the capitalist class.
If fascist dictatorship came to the United States – or any other major country - suffering and persecution would be enormous. Widespread, even mass, murder would be the order of the day. World War III could very well be on the agenda. Fascism must be resisted – energetically and massively resisted!
But fascism would in no way solve basic economic and social problems. Fascism is a political system of capitalism; and capitalism has no long-term solution. None.
