It is the underlying assumption of all anti-communist judgements of “Stalin repression” that the “wonderful, humanitarian, democratic” imperialist countries would not possibly stoop to massively, perniciously organize and richly finance subversive and disruptive activities within a competing socialist (or even a non-socialist) country.
To record the monumental horrific and ghastly crimes of “civilized” imperialism over the centuries goes well beyond the scope of this essay. Slavery and the slave trade, the brutal subjugation – if not genocidal extermination/ near extermination – of native peoples, colonialism and neo-colonialism, murderous wars after wars; all of this is somehow shoved under the table and is effectively barred from discussion.
The successful fruition and striking progress of a rival socialist system in the very large land area known as the Soviet Union – was viewed correctly(!) as an existential threat to the brutal capitalist system of mass exploitation and super-exploitation with all its resulting horrors.
Of course, the imperialist powers exerted every effort to destroy Soviet socialism from within and without!
The massive endeavor was simultaneously external and internal.
The horrendous external arm of this insidious anti-human plot was the gargantuan, dedicated, desperate world-wide scheme by the imperialist powers – led by the United States of America - to massively arm and direct the brutal fascist powers – first and foremost Nazi Germany – to destroy the USSR in direct combat. The so-called “democratic,” “friendly” (ostensibly, to the USSR!) regime of arch-criminal American President Franklin D. Roosevelt was a fundamental player is this hidious crime. The no less insidious internal component of imperialism's vicious conspiracy was internal - within the Soviet Union itself - disruption of the vibrant socialist economy and the political system giving it guidance. Blocking and disrupting monstrous subversive machinations were the foundation of the deliberately and treacherously mis-named “Stalin repressions.”
