The ACLU finds a “communist” heroine...
Upon joining the CPUSA, I was surprised and pleased to learn that there was a sizeable (by CP standards) youth contingent in the Boston (Massachusetts) area. I got to know all of these pretend-communists, and it is enlightening to follow what happened to them from the perspective of half a century later.
Let us begin with Donna Lieberman, a one-time red-hot Radcliffe-Harvard “communist.”
“Donna Lieberman has been the executive director of the NYCLU since December 2001.” (New York Civil Liberties Union, Wikipedia). NYCLU is the New York branch of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Many, if not most, Americans know the ACLU as a near-constant courtroom “opponent” of the United States government. The ACLU and/or its branches regularly file suits (which they usually lose) and issue militant-sounding statements contesting this or that US governmental action or policy. Let us review the “official” CIA/FBI version of this “stellar” organization:
“The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonprofit organization whose stated mission is 'to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.' Officially nonpartisan,.. the ACLU works through litigation and lobbying and it has over 1,200,000 members and an annual budget of over $100 million. Local affiliates of the ACLU are active in almost all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The ACLU provides legal assistance in cases when it considers civil liberties to be at risk. If fact, the ACLU, the “Communist Party USA” and hundreds, if not thousands more “movement” organizations past and present are simply and maliciously the baked-in-the-cake ostensible “opposition” fashioned and directed by the American secret political police, in accordance with the principle I have noted earlier:
“It is far, far, far better for the reactionary US (and not only the US!) ruling class to organize a manifold variety of fake movements which the secret political police entirely control. A great deal of noise and 'furor' can be generated, but nothing permanent or meaningful develops. And the 'movements' can be turned off when needed.” (Dictatorship USA – Part 9АA)

Personal experience with the ACLU...
After I was peremptorily fired on FBI orders from my cancer research work in Houston, Texas in 1986, I went to the local ACLU office seeking help. By that time, I was no longer naive and knew what the ACLU was. Nonetheless, when a target – such as I was - is virtually defenseless against a far, far more powerful opponent, it may be wise to take a shot at some prospect - even if the chances of success are minimal.
“What chances would we have to protest our case within the United States? After receiving Anderson's letter *, Jennifer and I drove to the offices of the Texas Civil Liberties Union in Houston. I was familiar with its parent organization, the ACLU, having worked on projects with the organization's national office in the 1960s.
“I explained to the director that I had been fired for political reasons from my job in cancer research. 'Could the Civil Liberties Union offer any help?' I inquired. The director asked for no particulars about my case and said that it would cost a considerable sum to get legal advice which, in any case, would probably be of little use. Surely, I argued, this organization could be of assistance. She shook her head negatively. Lieberman continues to maintain her “radical” (the word “communist” does not enter the discussion) pretensions. She nonetheless holds a high-paying, soft job. No persecution, no slander, no psychological warfare against her, no forced exile from her country...
Such is the life of an FBI stooge.
