Opening my eyes wider...

The “Communist Party's” inaction – or worse - in the Ohio labor anti-Vietnam war campaign intensified my serious disquiet about the “Party.” There was, after all, no more important communist, internationalist task at the time than opposing brutal, murderous US imperialist aggression against the peoples of Vietnam/Indochina.

Given the realities of American politics, the results of the effort I initiated were impressive: “... a full-page anti-war statement was published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer (“Silent Terror,” Photo 19)... Later, the Cleveland Association of Labor AFL-CIO, representing more than 150,000 workers, passed a nearly unanimous resolution calling upon the US government to end the war in Indochina and to use the money and manpower for constructive purposes. The resolution also called upon the state and national AFL-CIO to reverse their pro-war stand.” (“Silent Terror,” p. 125)

Nothing comparable was accomplished anywhere else in the US.

The Party in all this? Anton Krchmarek, the former Chairman of the Ohio “CP,” did absolutely nothing to help. Worse, his replacement, Phil Bart#, actively tried to sabotage the effort with diversionary tactics.

To hamper the anti-war efforts, Lauren, who had played a positive role in the campaign##, was shipped out by the YWLL### (Young Workers Liberation League) to the Komsomol (Young Communist) Congress in the Soviet Union (see Photo 7 in “Silent Terror”).

At the next “Party” Central Committee meeting, neither General Secretary Gus Hall (see post 32) in his main report nor anyone else even mentioned the unique and important Ohio achievements.

At that meeting, I told Hall of my serious disquient concerning the “apathy” if not worse of the Ohio “comrades” and by inference of the national “Party” leadership as well. How was it possible, I asked, for communists to ignore the anti-war struggle? Earlier I had rationalized “party” inaction as the consequence of shell-shock resulting from fierce McCarthyite anti-communism. But that era was largely in the past, and new anti-war, civil rights and student movements had arisen. Where was the “Party” under the new favorable conditions that had arisen??

On to Los Angeles...

In 1972, I was the main organizer and workhourse in collecting thousands of signatures to successfully place Gus Hall and Jarvis Tyner#### on the Ohio presidential ballot. This was a meaningless endeavor which led to nothing positive, but I did not recognize it as such at the time. Even in this FBI-endorsed campaign, very few local “comrades” participated in the campaign and outsiders had to be brought in. What kind of “party” was this, anyway, I kept asking.

“Party” inaction in Ohio could not be explained by factionalism, as there was no evidence of that – just deadly inertia. So the national “Party” leadership - i.e. the FBI, transferred me to the hotbed of contrived “factionalism” - Southern California. The apparent reasoning: a political organization engulfed in internal infighting could not be expected to generate positive initiatives. In the Southern California district (the second largest in the country), Gus Hall explained (sort of) that my main task would be to overcome paralyzing dissent against the “party” line. The message: don't look for enemy agents, look for and deal with splitters.

In Southern California – and for the country as a whole - the factional “leader” was Dorothy Healey, which CIA-Wikipedia lauds:

“Dorothy Ray Healey (September 22, 1914 – August 6, 2006) was a long-time activist in the Communist Party USA, from the late 1920s to the 1970s...

“During the decades of the 1950s and 1960s, Healey was one of the leading public figures of the Communist Party in the state of California. An opponent of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 and at odds with the orthodox pro-Soviet leadership of Gus Hall, Healey subsequently left the Communist Party...

“A critical moment for her came in 1956, after the reading of Nikita Khrushchev's speech, 'On the Personality Cult and its Consequences,' which revealed the crimes that Joseph Stalin committed under the USSR's one-party system. 'The speech went on for four hours, and I was reduced to tears after about 30 minutes,' she said...

“She resigned from her leadership post in 1968, after Soviet Party Boss Leonid Brezhnev ordered Soviet and Warsaw Pact troops to crush the democratic socialist movement in Czechoslovakia. She stayed in the party until 1973, when she resigned in a dispute with CPUSA General Secretary Gus Hall...” (Dorothy Ray Healey, Wikipedia)

What stands out with stooge Healey - and in many other cases worldwide - is that CIA rat Khrushchev's (Хрущев) blasphemous slander of Joseph Stalin served as a signal for “communist” parties to be torn by internal dissention and, in most cases, eventually lose their – often largely fake - Marxist-Leninist bearings.

Of course, the ideological and political “battle” between Hall and Healey was pure subterfuge. The FBI was managing both “sides” of this “dispute.” When I came on the scene in 1972, I had no idea that this was the case. And in my capacity as new District Organizer, I took on the factionalists.

In her book written after the fact, Healey comes out against me:

“(The Southern California District Organizer) replacement, Arnold Lockshin, was a rigid dogmatist, utterly convinced that Party history started in 1967, the year he happened to join. He later gained considerable publicity for his 'defection' along with his family to the Soviet Union on the eve of the Reagan-Gorbachev summit meeting in Reykjavik in 1986.” (California Red, A Life in the American Communist Party, Dorothy Ray Healey and Maurice Isserman, 1993)

A side note: A copy of Healey's book was “left” in a Moscow bookstore which Lauren and I used to frequent as it sold English-language used books. It is inconceivable that anyone else in Moscow would have had the slightest interest in Healey's trash. That book was deliberately left by the CIA-FSB simply for me to read the insulting passage about myself.
