The Souther-Орлов ruse was a backup plan for the murderous elimination of Arnold Lockshin.
Problem: What should be done with Arnold Lockshin if he chooses not to go back to the United States? Despite the marked political and social deterioration in his adopted USSR plus the pernicious and devious CIA-KGB efforts aimed at his forsaking political asylum and returning where he came from. There certain death awaited Lockshin.
His actual suicide in the Soviet Union would not be a bad second-best option.
Look at the apparent similarities between Arnold Lockshin and phony Souther-Орлов:
-1. The papier-mache Souther-Орлов came to Russia the same year that I did: 1986.
-2. He was, like me (Section 3), close to his progressive mother but not his father.

Here was a fellow Lockshin could empathize with! True, Souther-Орлов was a spy and I was nothing of the kind. But the CIA-KGB understood that if they had concocted their sham American as a political figure, I would have been very suspicious. Knowing as I did and do the real state of “left,” “socialist” politics in the police state dictatorship that is the USA. (Section 2)

Let us suppose that Lockshin believed in the Souther-Орлов myth and that I fully empathized with this glorious compatriot. If he did something decisive, something absolutely despairing – or so the thinking went – I might well follow his “tragic” example.

Through it the propagandist (psychological warfare expert – AL) can dispense with all rational appeals and arguments, with all preliminary manipulation in fact, and succeed in getting the individual to react in the desired manner by exploiting the latter's predispositions and preconditioning.” (Propaganda Comes of Age, Michael Choukas, 1965, p. 206)
The aim would be to compel Lockshin to become “... an individual thoroughly drained of all powers of discimination, of all critical reasoning ability, and reduced to the lowest possible plane, the emotional, where he can operate only under external, and hence artificial stimulation and guidance.” (Propaganda Comes of Age, Michael Choukas, 1965, p. 146)
What was needed to drive me to this point of despair? A shock. “At the appropriate critical period... a critical cascade effect may be induced, causing the target to lose all sense of reality.” (Silent Terror, p. 104)
What kind of shock?
