As the “Civil War” was ending, the leading founder of the Soviet state – Vladimir Lenin – became seriously ill and semi-incapacitated as the result of a serious bullet wound to the throat inflicted in 1918 by a member of the British-intelligence run “Socialist Revolutionary Party (см. After Lenin's death in January 1924, the czarist and imperialist agents within the Bolshevik Party engaged in a ferocious, prolonged assault to decapitate the revolution from within.
“The world bourgeoisie resorted to its tried and trusted method of employing its agents within the USSR, making use of opposition forces within the Bolshevik Party to fight Leninism. All kinds of people had wormed their way into the ranks of the Bolsheviks... Quite a number of them had joined the Bolshevik Party in order to disrupt it from within. It is not surprising therefore that after the victory of the Revolution and especially after the end of the Civil War, as soon as the country embarked on the construction of socialism, there appeared within the Party numerous revisionist and opportunist currents – all working from different sides to overthrow Lenin's plan for building socialism...” (At the Turning Points of History, S. “The leaders of “Left” revolutionism and Right reformism held key posts in the Government and Party. Trotsky up to 1925 stood at the head of the Soviet Union's armed forces; Zinoviev was at the head of the Leningrad Party organization and of the delegation to the Cominterm; Kamenev was Chairman of the Politbureau of the Party's Central Committee; Rykov was head of the Government as Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR; Bukharin was Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper Pravda and then head of the CPSU(B) delegation to the Cominterm; Tomsky was at the head of the Soviet trade unions. In addition, the trotskyists and bukharinites had been planting their own men in key jobs in the organs of the press and other ideological institutions.

A treacherous aim stands clearly revealed – that of disrupting the unity of the Party's leading core and starting a big fight to wreck the Party itself.” (Trapeznikov, p. 85)
“Both the trotskyites and the bukharinites terrorized the staunch Leninist cadres and shook the Party to its foundations. Intrigues, blackmail, calumny, threats, scurillous jokes – these formed the armamentarium of the revisionist (subversive/traitorous – AL) ideologues' mean methods.” (Trapeznikov, p. 87)

Genuine Bolsheviks, led by Stalin, were successful in thwarting the internal assault of imperialist agents within the Bolshevik Party. But not without serious costs.
For years following Lenin's death, the Party and Government were thrown in turmoil with repeated disruptions and diversions. All this served the aim of disrupting the building of socialism, in particular the urgent necessity of modernizing agriculture and building a powerful industrial base for the country.
In preparation for the direct external imperialist assault that was sure to come.
